Name Change Due to Marriage

In Pennsylvania, a name change after marriage is optional. If you decide to change your name, you will need certified copies of your marriage record to update your driver’s license, Social Security card, and other identification.

To update your name with the Social Security Administration, be prepared to provide documents that verify your:

• Legal name change (marriage certificate, divorce decree, court order, Certificate of Naturalization, etc.)
• Identity
• U.S. citizenship or immigration status

How to Update Your Social Security Card After a Name Change

To receive a Social Security card showing your new married name, complete the application for a new card and submit it in person or by mail to your local Social Security office.

Document Requirements

• All documents must be originals or certified copies issued by the proper agency
Photocopies and notarized copies are not accepted
• Any original documents mailed to the SSA will be returned to you along with a receipt

After your documents are verified, the Social Security Administration will mail your updated card. Most applicants receive their new card in approximately 10 business days from the date on the receipt.
Your Social Security number will not change, but your card will reflect your new legal name.
