After You Apply for a Marriage License

Steps After Applying for a Marriage License

The top portion of the Marriage License is for the person to keep who performs the marriage ceremony.

The middle portion of the Marriage License is for the bride and groom to keep and is for decoration purposes only.

The bottom portion (also known as the duplicate) of the Marriage License is to be returned to the Clerk of Courts Office after the person who performed the ceremony completes it in full.

Once the duplicate has been filed with the Clerk of Courts, a Certification will be prepared and mailed to the applicants within 5 days. You may take this document to any Social Security Office to change the last name of the applicant.  The Certification of Marriage may be used for any legal purpose to prove of the marriage.

Additional certifications may be requested.
